Belgian exhibitors anticipate much from World Expo

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Belgian exhibitors to this year’s World Expo in Shanghai believe that the Expo will give a substantive boost to the development of the world, Belgium’s commissioner for the Expo said Monday.
The influence of the World Expo in Shanghai would not only be in terms of technology but also of concepts, Leo Delcroix said in an interview with Xinhua.
Delcroix will head more than 100 exhibitors from Belgium which hosted the 1958 Brussels World Expo, the first after World War II.
Delcroix, who has enthusiastically promoted the participation of Belgian companies in the Expo, said China’s market is 100 times the size of Spain’s. He also noted the “formidable” changes that have taken place in China in all these years.
An atmosphere of prosperity and hope, key to a successful world exposition, will also be helpful to the development of the world economy, Delcroix said.
This year’s world exposition in Shanghai is expected to draw between 70 million and 80 million visitors from around the world, while the 1958 Expo in Brussels attracted some 40 million visitors.
Delcroix, a former defense minister of Belgium, said humanity would progress better if people have beliefs and enthusiasm in things.
The delegation chief briefed Xinhua about the highlights of the Belgian exhibitors.
In the Belgian pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, there will be a “Diamond Corner” and a “Chocolate Corner” to showcase the country’s prowess in these spheres.
Delcroix said that during the six-month exposition Belgians would also host 150 seminars and conferences in the host city.
He added that Belgian king Albert II or the crown prince, and several government ministers would visit the World Expo in Shanghai in a bid to draw potential investors to Belgium.

Construction has been finished on the joint pavilion of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and General Motors, with an exterior cloaked in 4,000 recycled aluminum panels giving a smooth and seamless appearance.

The panels are of slightly different sizes, tilted at angles and cambers. Advanced technologies used in car manufacturing were applied to position them.

The applications included modeling, metallic painting and emendation, which are similar to the technologies applied in making car panels.

The pavilion recently received the Most Excellent Public Building Prize from the Architectural Society of Shanghai for its unique design concept, elaborate construction process, and human and environmentally friendly facilities. It was the only corporate pavilion of Expo 2010 to receive the award.

Interior decoration and exhibition testing have started. The first batch of the pavilion’s souvenirs will go on sale at www.our2030.com late this month.

Online application to visit the pavilion will start in March.

Former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin learns about the master plan of the 2010 Expo.

Former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said today he hoped the France Pavilion would remain after the 2010 Expo to promote Sino-French long-term cultural exchanges.

Raffarin represented France to confirm the country’s participation in the 2010 Expo in 2005, the first country to do so.

He invited Chinese people to visit his Blog at www.carnetjpr.com, which has a Chinese version, at a press conference in Shanghai today, and said he would write stories about the Expo.

Sino-French ties are not only limited to political and economic fields, but culture as well, he said.

The former prime minister will visit the Expo site during the event. He told reporters that Le Figaro, a French daily newspaper, would organize a readers’ group to the Expo site in June.

Some French schools are also preparing a similar visit to promote Chinese study for their students, he revealed.

France will celebrate its pavilion’s national day by hosting a music festival.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to visit the 2010 World Expo site in the first half of this year, Raffarin said.
